I feel bad admitting this, but it wasn’t until last week that I learned about International World Water Day. It’s all good, though. Now I can share the knowledge of this annual celebration.
World Water Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and “advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.” As soon as I read that on their website, it struck an immediate chord.
Today, being World Water Day 2012, is a perfect day to share the staggering fact that it takes 400 gallons of water to grow the cotton for just one new T-Shirt. That’s around the same amount of water that two average people would drink in a whole year – for one T-Shirt! Talk about a not sustainable use of freshwater.
It’s because of this water waste that I could never go back to being the touring merchandiser that I once was and, more importantly, it’s why I do what I do with STAY VOCAL and our reuse apparel. Last year, we launched the Water Saver Series, specifically designed to let people know how much water you have helped save by choosing a reuse shirt over a new one. This year, we’re doing a few special things to celebrate. If you’d like to support this water saving effort, please check out what STAY VOCAL is doing here.
Thanks, and happy World Water Day!.
